Day 1 of the competition and nerves were shot. There was a sponsored brunch, which was an epic fail as catering ran out, so poor team UCT had a muffin/croissant each and sent on their way. With 30 mins to go, I raced around the underground mall trying to buy some take away breakfast(which proved a mission as Canada prefers cash to cards, and MasterCard instead of Visa). Crisis averted and our team fed just in time, they were locked in for their 3 hour prep session.
I set out to find a grocery store. IGA is like their version if Spar, and only being 5 blocks away, I took a stroll. Rather hazardous since the now is 20cm thick all around and on the salted pavements it turns into a brown, slippery mess. But after braving the -14C weather, I made it. Bought supplies and took a warm taxi home, this time paying by card....weird.
The first presentation was amazing. The boys ironed out all their hick ups from their practice session and nailed it, their competition for the case was Florida University, who lets just say underestimated the team from Africa(pronounced with serious American twang). Needless to say it was a land slide win putting team UCT at the top of their 6 team division and in seriously high spirits.
Tomorrow they do 2 cases. After that the score board should be more clear on their standing.
I am recovering well.
